mil units are switching to 11.5 for some of the reasons I just gave.Īnd I'm pretty sure people have been saying 12.5 is the sweet spot for a long damn time. I will also say that parts seem to wear out a little faster in 10.3's Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the HSLD. It's not a HOLY SHIT ditch your 10.3 setup and go to 11.5 difference, but you can't argue the data. You have have increased dwell time, bore pressure is significantly reduced, and muzzle velocity increases an appreciable amount when you stop and think what CQBRish rifles are meant to do. That little 1.2 inch increase makes a sizable difference in a few notable areas. That being said when it comes time to replace the upper I'm going to push for 11.5. It is absolutely correct that a properly built MK18 or similar 10.3 gun will run like a sewing machine. My go to gun is a Mk18 and I love it and 100% trust it. I think people get waaayy too wrapped around the axle when it comes to SBR's. Okay, so I'm going to agree with this a lot and yet still disagree if that makes any damn sense. People are already starting to say that 12.5 is actually ideal. I've said it before, but we as gun enthusiasts are worse than teenage girls when it comes to trends. Having said that if someone wants to be able to shoot at a very slightly greater distance, get the 11.5. I mean, has there SOCOM been having many issues with their MK18's shitting the bed lately? I want see where all these stoppages/failures are apparently happening with a 10.3" barrel but don't happen with a 11.5. I would love to see some data comparing a properly built MK18's reliability (e.g., DD) to a 11.5 of similar quality. People have really latched onto and are regurgitating the same claims they hear on the internet. Not trying to talk OP out of his 11.5" build idea, but this is absolutely right. Once again, if properly set up with quality parts (appropriate gas port size, buffer weight, etc.), I have detected no difference in reliability. You can read a lot into theories about reliability and longevity, but in pretty much all cases, a properly installed quality LPGB covered by a handguard is going to be perfectly fine in any environment, regardless of attachment method.Īs for dwell time and reliability differences between 10.x” guns and 11.5” guns, I own and use both with thousands and thousands of rounds through each at this point. Standard low profile block on DD manufactured barrels is taper pinned.Mil does not do that with the Mk12 blocks on their guns, just set screw, so in theory, the commercial offering is more “durable.”
